
The Ministry of Commerce & Industry launched the National Turmeric Board (NTB) on January 14, 2025, with its headquarters in Nizamabad, Telangana.
Often referred to as India’s Golden Spice, turmeric holds a prominent place in global trade, known for its vibrant color, health benefits, and versatile applications. The NTB aims to strengthen turmeric cultivation, processing, and trade, benefiting farmers across 20 states, including Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana.

Purpose: Boost farmer income and cement India’s position as the global leader in turmeric production and exports.
Structure: Includes representatives from key ministries and rotating members from three states.
Golden Spice on the Global Stage:
- India produces 75% of the world’s turmeric and holds 62% of the export market.
- In 2022-23, exports totaled 1,53,400 tonnes valued at USD 207.45 million.
- Major markets: Bangladesh, UAE, US, and Malaysia.
GI Varieties: Unique turmeric types like Lakadong (Meghalaya), Kandhamal (Odisha), Erode (Tamil Nadu), and Armoor (Telangana) have received GI tags for their superior quality.
HSN Code: Turmeric is classified under HSN Code 0910, which includes spices like turmeric, ginger, and saffron.
Health Benefits: The active compound curcumin in turmeric is renowned for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and digestive properties.
